Living in the promised land - Essay Example In an interview segment one, Grace Kapuro a physician from Philippines living in America gives a viably different approach to life in America. She alluded that in Philippines she had an easy life compared to the life in America. She claimed that life in America could be described as busy life where one has to do all chores compared to Philippines where she could get house maids. The adjustment in language, foods, dressing and customs as she puts it, was not as easy but was worthwhile. In the career field in Philippines she was a doctor but had to do some academic adjustments to fit if the medical field in America which later became very fulfilling (Luis canjura.segment 1) According to Kapuro the Philams (Philipine Americans) were different from the Philippino immigrants in some aspect of maintaining culture. The immigrants had been able to maintain their culture but the American born Philippines had already been integrated into the American culture. After the adjustments the physician said America is the country filled with milk and honey (Luis canjura.segment 1) Benito Vergara argues that relocating to the United States for their own individual interest is a betrayal to the Philippines because they are only immigrating for their own material success. Grace grabbed the opportunity and struggled the first few years she settled in. Immigrating to America, Grace saw it as an opportunity because she wanted to fulfill her American dream (Luis canjura.segment 2). After settling in America, Grace petitioned for her husband later her father. For the majority of Filipinos, it is true that they immigrate to America for their financial requirements which according to Grace seemed different in the early years of living in America. Homesickness was a common feeling in America, based on the fact that America had own cultures, food, language and the busy life in the city (Vergers, 46). Lessons of the Darkness in A Midsummer Night’s Dream The physical darkness impairs normal vision: the dark is intense enough for characters to fear being alone. Helena cries out to Demetrius not to abandon her "darkling," or in the dark (2.2 l. 93). Hermia seems certain that her abandonment in the dark by Lysander could lead to her death: "Speak, of all loves. I swoon almost with fear. / No? Then I well perceive you are not nigh. / Either death or you I'll find immediately" (2.2. ll. 160-2). The dark forest is far from hospitable to Hermia's imagination, but Shakespeare's night actually protects and instructs the lovers. Hermia's line give a clue to how they must learn to cope without their eyes: she does not see that Lysander is not near, but rather "perceives"-her hearing is the sense on which she comes to depend. Hearing and sight operate quite differently: while sight can be controlling (consider Foucault's panopticon, and the use of observation as power), listening requires openness. The temporal element of listening necessitates patience (Tu Wei-ming, 2/11/99). Hermia is able to find her lover eventually by using her hearing to its full potential: Dark night, that from the eye his function takes, The ear more quick of apprehension makes. (3.2 ll. 178-183) Here is the power of night to transform the gaze. The eye's power is taken, but the ear's is augmented. This Hermia seems far more confident than the Hermia of only a few scenes ago, who was certain she would perish without her lover. She speaks with a kind of triumph about her own ability to improvise: her ear paid "double recompense" has been more than adequate to the task. The night "pays," rewards, gives gifts in place of what it takes away. Hermia, thrilled to see her lover and to discover her own ability to improvise, goes so far as to thank her own ear. Relying on different kinds of perception leads Hermia to Lysander, just as the night world brings all four lovers to a truer understanding of themselves and their loves, making possible a happy ending for everyone by the end of the play. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, the nighttime forest, by disrupting and transforming vision, forces introspection and improvisation that help the four lovers on their way to self-understanding.

What Happens If You X-Ray Metal

Metal appears as a bright area on an x-ray, blocking visibility of underlying structures. The reason youre asked to remove metal is to give the radiologist an unobstructed view of the area of interest. Basically, you remove metal because it blocks anatomy. If you have a metal implant, obviously you cant remove it for an x-ray, but if the technician is aware of it, he may position you differently to get the best imaging results or take x-rays from multiple angles. The reason metal appears bright on the x-ray image is that it is extremely dense, so x radiation does not penetrate it as well as it does soft tissues. This is also why bones appear bright on an x-ray. Bones are denser than blood, cartilage, or soft organs. The Issue of Metal in the X-Ray Room Unless the metal item is directly in the path between the x-ray collimator and the image receptor, theres no issue having metal objects in the same room as an x-ray machine. On the other hand, metal objects are not permitted in a room housing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment because the objects will be drawn toward the powerful magnets when the machine is turned on. Then, the problem isnt with the image. Its a matter of the items because of hazardous projectiles, which could injure people or damage equipment.
